Gilani for ''positive'' messaging on Osama killing

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today lobbied with the US and Britain for putting a positive spin on the killing of Osama bin Laden by American forces in Pakistan, saying his country will continue to support efforts to eliminate terrorism.Latest World News

Gilani raised the need for "positive" and "constructive" messaging about the killing of the world's most wanted man during a meeting with visiting US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman and in a telephone conversation with British premier David Cameron.

He told Cameron that "positive messaging about Pakistan rather than finger pointing was the need of the hour".

In order to continue Pakistan's "national consensus to defeat" extremism and terrorism, the country's role should be "duly recognised by the international community", he said.

Cameron telephoned Gilani this evening to express solidarity with Pakistan, said a statement issued by the Pakistani premier's office.

Gilani reiterated his government's "resolute commitment to take the war against terrorism to its logical conclusion" and said Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role for regional stability.

During his meeting with Grossman, Gilani emphasised the need for "constructive and positive messaging" from Pakistan and the US on today's operation that killed bin Laden and stressed that "sensitivities in this regard must be given due importance rather than giving it a spin".

The Al Qaeda chief was killed with four others during a pre-dawn raid by US forces on a compound near the garrison city of Abbottabad in northwest Pakistan.

Media reports have suggested that the US informed Pakistan of full details of the operation only after bin Laden was killed.

Gilani told Grossman that he appreciated US President Barack Obama's statement in which he acknowledged Pakistan's support and cooperation in tracing the hideout of bin Laden.

The official statement quoted Cameron as saying that he regretted "negative comments about Pakistan" in the aftermath of the death of bin Laden but assured Gilani that the British government "fully understood the ground realities in Pakistan and the pivotal role of the government of Pakistan in the war against terror".

Cameron also hoped that the process of reconciliation and reintegration in Afghanistan would now "progress smoothly and expeditiously".

In yet another statement issued by his office, Gilani highlighted Pakistan's role in the struggle to eliminate terrorism and vowed that his country will continue to support international endeavours against this menace.

"The arrangements for comprehensive and effective intelligence sharing between our intelligence agencies with other countries' agencies including the US are in place," he said.

Govt may name prosecutor in 2G case tomorrow

NEW DELHI - Government may come up with the name of the special public prosecutor to represent the CBI in the 2G spectrum allocation scam tomorrow, a top agency official said today.

The probe agency has already clarified that it was the prerogative of the government to appoint a counsel and that there was no difference of opinion on the proposed appointment of senior advocate U U Lalit as special public prosecutor in the 2G spectrum case.

The CBI had told the Supreme Court that it could not find a lawyer to represent it in the spectrum allocation case, following which the apex court had suggested Lalit's name.

Most of the senior expert lawyers have either received briefings by telecom firms or have been hired by them.

Later, the Union Government objected to Lalit's name in the Supreme Court on technical grounds saying that he did not have the required experience.

Senior CBI officials said the agency's role is only to carry out a probe in the case and it is the Government's domain to appoint the prosecutor.

"We have no problem with anybody (lawyer) proposed by the government for the case," the CBI official said.

The CBI had started probing the spectrum allocation scam in 2009.

On April 2, the agency filed its first chargesheet against 12 accused including former Telecom Minister A Raja alleging that he had manipulated the procedure for allocation of spectrum with the aim of favouring companies like Swan Telecom and the Unitech Group.

The agency will file a supplementary chargesheet in the case by April 25.

BJP alleges Rs 63,000 cr scam in North East

NEW DELHI - Alleging a scam to the tune of Rs 63,000 crore in developmental works carried out in the North-East, BJP today appealed to President Pratibha Patil to direct the authorities to carry out a detailed investigation into the "loot".India News

BJP President Nitin Gadkari today led a delegation to Rashtrapati Bhawan to hand over to Patil a memorandum on the issue as also a copy of party's report on scams in the North East.

The report claimed that if the level of corruption in the region was quantified, it could be to the tune of Rs 63,000 crore. Various scams in Assam, according to the report, have been quantified to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore.

Talking to media after submitting the memorandum, Gadkari said, "The scandals in the North East have broken all records...there is a scam in PDS due to which poor are not getting their quota of rice which is sold in Bangladesh."

The report of the BJP team was based on evidence collected using the Right to Information, he said.

BJP has demanded setting up of special courts to deal with the issue of corruption in the region to ensure speedy disposal of cases.

The party also demanded a "coordinated investigation" by various investigation agencies, including the NIA and CBI.

"As the Constitutional Head, I would urge you to ask the concerned authorities to have a detailed investigation...such scandalous administration affects people's faith in the democracy," the memorandum read.

The BJP leader alleged that when Congress leaders from the region realised that their counterparts in Delhi were indulging in "loot", they "decided not to lag behind".

Gadkari had recently said that he would urge senior party leader and PAC Chairman M M Joshi to take up the CAG report on North-East at the earliest.National Headlines

Need to raise intensity on field, says MS Dhoni

CHENNAI - Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni expects his team to raise the intensity as the World Cup approaches and he wants a proof of it in the second and final pre-event warm-up game against New Zealand here tomorrow.Latest Sports News

"We need to pick up a bit of intensity on the field. We will be progressing into the World Cup games this being the last warm up match you will see the intensity will be bit up on the field," Dhoni said ahead of the match.

Brushing aside talk of World Cup, beginning February 19, being an acid test of his captaincy, Dhoni said challenges will always be there.

"Tests will always be there. There will be always something new coming up to present a different kind of challenge. So I think World Cup is also one of them. As far as the team is concerned, I feel we have got a very good side.

That's what really matters," Dhoni said.

"I do not believe in comparisons. But if you see the mix of players, it is really good. It is not about the kind of players we have got on paper, but what we do on the field which matters at the end of day," he added.

On the middle-order batting collapse in the first warm-up tie against Australia, which India won by 38 runs due to a good bowling performance, Dhoni said "I think we needed a partnership in the middle, which didn't really happen for us.

That was one of the reasons we were not able to score big.

"The lower order's contribution of 49 helped us. At the end of the day, we didn't really have a par score on the board as we made 214. But spinners really bowled well they used the conditions well," he added.

Talking about the preparation and the likely playing XI in the World Cup, Dhoni said, "most of the players are doing well which means that for one or two spots we are talking about, you have one or two contenders trying to grab the place.

"It is really good for the side, because this means we have got more options and more the options the better it is.

The selection depends on the condition of wicket for each game and as to how we read the wicket. It is really good for the side that everyone is shaping up well for the tournament," he added. .India News
